Matter and Memory
March 2007 - Fair Trade: Material Matters launch event as part of Matter and Memory, 2nd Moscow Biennale
Installation, exhibition and international participation.
My work for “Matter & Memory” was the result of interaction between master’s level students from the Institute of Problems of Contemporary Art, Moscow, Valand School of Fine Arts, Staedelschule, Frankfurt, The California College of Art in San Francisco and the Norwich School of Art and Design, UK.
The launch of ‘Fair Trade: Material Matters' at 2nd Moscow Biennale in 2007 was a fair-trade exchange within the art community. A growing collection of drawn self-portraits by artists to become an online community and a physical hand stitched quilt that displays the portraits. Recycled wool blankets and woad dyed wool yarn are the material matter creating the physical work; commonly a first touch sensation for people they often evoke significant memories in many cultures and situations.
The setting of the exhibition was a former brewery building, in the early stages of redevelopment to become the The Art Centre Winzavod. This created a dystopian atmosphere for the whole exhibition. Matter and Memory link
